  • Showdown averted by reported Palestinian statehood deal?
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has reportedly signed off on a deal that would delay indefinitely the Palestinian effort to gain recognition as a state at the United Nations. Unnamed diplomats said the agreement -- in which Abbas would submit a request for recognition to the Security Council, which would then defer a vote while peace talks were relaunched with Israel -- represents a compromise that would allow Abbas to save face, and spare the U.S. from exercising a veto.
