Ban urges accord on countering climate change
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged delegates at the climate talks in Poland to reach agreement on combating global warming. "I am deeply concerned that the scale of our actions is still insufficient to limit global temperature rise to below two degrees Celsius from pre-industrial levels," Ban said, noting that "people now face and fear the wrath of a warming planet." "Everyone sees the effect of climate change on the environment in the form of rising sea levels, droughts, floods, tsunamis, typhoons, and extreme temperatures. As if those were not scary or devastating enough, there is one aspect of climate change that many have not considered: your personal health." UN Dispatch (11/20)

OPCW considers destroying Syrian chemical weapons at sea, envoys say
The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons is considering destroying Syria's chemical weapons stockpile at sea on a ship or offshore rig, write Anthony Deutsch and Michelle Nichols. "While other states, notably Japan, have dealt with chemical weapons at sea, mounting such a large and complex operation afloat would be unprecedented," they write. Reuters (11/19)

Advocates: Address noncommunicable diseases in post-2015 goals
Measures to reduce the four major noncommunicable diseases -- diabetes, cancer, heart and lung disease -- need to be included in the post-2015 development agenda, health advocates say. The three pillars of the post-2015 agenda are social equity, environmental protection and economic growth, "and we have a huge amount of evidence to show that NCDs impact all three of them," said Katie Dain of the NCD Alliance. African women need better access to contraception, sterilization procedures, group says
The lack of trained doctors is hindering sterilization and injectable contraceptives efforts in Africa, says Leo Bryant, a senior policy manager with Marie Stopes International. Allowing medics and nurses to perform these procedures would give more women access to these family planning methods, Bryant argues. Thomson Reuters Foundation (11/20)

Issue of loss and damage is polarizing climate talks
Representatives of poorer countries briefly walked out of the United Nations climate talks in Poland today, protesting the lack of action by richer countries on loss and damage. At issue is payments from rich countries to poorer ones that are more affected by global warming. "We must come up with an outcome here in Warsaw that addresses loss and damage in the form of an international mechanism," says Naderev "Yeb" Saño, Philippine climate change commissioner.
