UN readies for potential precipitous decline in Central African Republic
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told the Security Council on Monday that Central African Republic unrest "might well lead to uncontrollable sectarian violence with untold consequences for the country, the sub-region and beyond." UN's Amos focuses on long-term and immediate relief in Philippines
United Nations emergency relief head Valerie Amos says aid workers are providing immediate aid to Filipinos as well as beginning to evaluate long-term needs such as food and infrastructure. "We have to start to do the assessment so that we know what the longer-term damage is and the cost and how that money will be raised," Amos says. Meanwhile, a Philippine government official says it could cost $5.8 billion to rebuild damage from Super Typhoon Haiyan. World Toilet Day puts the focus on sanitation
Today is the first United Nations World Toilet Day, which recognizes the importance of sanitation to health and development. A just-released World Bank study says that better sanitation gives children a leg up on learning. "Open defecation lies at the root of many development challenges, as poor sanitation and lack of access to toilets impact public health, education and the environment," says World Bank water and sanitation manager Jaehyang So. New self-contained systems may provide for hope than expensive sewage systems in reaching an estimated 2.5 billion people without access to flush toilets, Chelsea Wald writes in Nautilus.
