Draft surveillance and human rights resolution moves to General Assembly committee for vote
A United Nations draft resolution on surveillance and human rights will be voted on next week by the General Assembly's Third Committee. Besides asking member states to review surveillance policies in regard to human rights, the resolution also calls for UN human rights chief Navi Pillay to present a report "on the protection and promotion of the right to privacy in domestic and extraterritorial surveillance and the interception of digital communications and collection of personal data, including on a mass scale," writes Michelle Nichols. Typhoon death toll tops 5,200 as disaster highlights U.S. food aid policy
The Philippines National Disaster Agency is putting the death toll from Typhoon Haiyan at 5,209. About 4 million people were also displaced. Meanwhile, the U.S. policy of sending U.S.-based food aid is again being called into question. Harnessing the power of IT to tackle climate change
Information and communications technology has the power to address the urgent need to combat climate change, but requires action, involvement and support to do so, write Christiana Figueres, United Nations climate change chief, and Luis Neves, chair of Global E-Sustainability Initiative. "ICT has become an incredibly powerful force changing almost every aspect of our lives at unprecedented speed; it is time to harness that power to bring a similar pace to climate change action," they argue.
