THREE Bolivian artists were shot as they rehearsed for a carnival due to take places just hours later.

The men were shot in separate incidents around Burgess Park, Albany Road, at 8.20pm on Saturday, August 1, as they rehearsed for Sunday's Carnaval del Pueblo.

All are in a stable condition in a South London hospital.

Cops believe they were also robbed.

The first victim, thought to be in his 40s was shot in the foot near the lake in Burgess Park, a 29-year-old man was shot in the stomach on Coburg Street, Camberwell, and a 34-year-old man was shot in the groin in the park.

Police believe the same suspects could be responsible for all three attacks and for the robbery of two further men, neither of whom were injured.
A Met spokesman said: "Carnaval del Pueblo, Southwark Council and the Metropolitan Police Service met on the morning of Sunday 2 August to discuss the event and it was agreed that carnival would go ahead as planned."

At 12pm the next day thousands of revellers flocked to the park to take part in Europe's largest Latino carnival.

The men were rehearsing dance moves that would have been performed on Andean stage at the carnival.

The stage was supposed to be near Burgess Park's lake but after the shooting police cordoned the area off and moved the Andean stage to the central area of the park, near the other stages.

Isaac Bigio, who helped organise the Andean stage, said: "The men were practising during the night when the incident happened.

"We think it was a racist attack because the men were shouting racist slogans.

"It was very sad what happened but it didn't affect the carnival day itself."

No one has been arrested over the incident.

The suspects are believed to be two men, one of whom was in possession of a handgun.
Detectives from Trident are investigating.

Any witnesses or anyone with information should call Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.

Few hours ago the Kjarkas finished its magnificent concert at the Coronet Theatre (Elephant and Castle). The best Bolivian band ever made this London's best ever celebrations of the Bolivian national day (August 6).

Despite the fact that it was Wednesday night/ Thursday early morning and a time when many people have to work the event was a success.

Guido, Richard and the Zapata brothers organised one of London's most sophisticated Latin American concerts. Eleven members of the Kjarkas travelled from Bolivia and around 30 local artists played other sings or dance Morenada, Tinkus and other Andean dances.

Mis Ecuador UK and a representative of the Iberian American Alliance explained the importance of the bicentenaries. The Kjarkas constantly commemorated the national days of all the Andean Community's countries.

WARDS CORNER IS FIGHTING BACK

FOR MINKA:

Justin Hinchcliffe is organising what he hopes will be Tottenham's biggest ever coffee morning to help raise funds to save the Latino-market at Ward's Corner. Money is needed to Appeal against the court's bizarre decision to reject a Judicial Review to save the much-loved market. The Ward's Corner Coalition is hopeful that they can win at the next stage, and Justin hopes to raise a minimum of £1000. A date and venue is yet to be decided, but it is likely that the event - which will be open to all for a recommended donation of just £4 - will be held in Tottenham sometime in September. If you can donate tea, make a cake, make a financial contribution (however small)and/ or you would like your business or organisation to sponsor the event, email justinhinchcliffe@hotmail.com - or call him on 020 8885 6492 - commercial stalls will cost just £20 and £15 for voluntary organisations.

Thank you

Justin Hinchcliffe

Wards Corner work to start in 2011
TOTTENHAM JOURNAL

DEMOLITION work at the contested Wards Corner site is unlikely to start until late 2011, developers have confirmed.

An unsuccessful high court judicial review mounted by opposition group the Wards Corner Community Coalition (WCC) has delayed construction at the site above Seven Sisters station in Tottenham.

Developer Grainger has confirmed: "We anticipate mid to late 2011 for demolition. An 18 to 24-month construction period is envisaged."

The developer is yet to acquire all property on the site and could be forced to use Haringey Council compulsory purchase powers which can take up to two years.

Talks are also to be held with Transport for London about the Tube station which Grainger says will take a minimum of two months.

The WCC plans to appeal the High Court's decision which could delay timetables still further.

Letter to the Journal in defence of Wards Corner

Dear Sir:
I see from your report of (Thursday, 6th August) that the saga of Ward's Corner has taken yet another bizarre turn. The private developer (Grainger) to whom Haringey Borough Council handed over this piece of Tottenham's heritage on a silver platter, have now pulled the rug out from underneath the Council's feet. Labour Haringey told us repeatedly that Ward's Corner was an "eyesore" and that this site, the "gateway to Tottenham" needed to be cleared and replaced with something 'shiny' and 'new' in time for the 2012 London Olympics. Never mind the demolition of a lovely old building that could be beautifully restored. Never mind the loss of jobs and homes of traders in the Latino market based there. Never mind the overwhelming opposition from local residents. But developer Grainger has now announced that demolition of the site cannot even begin until 2011! Which means that there is no way that their new building will be completed and occupied before the 2012 Olympics. So the central reason for Haringey Council pushing this proposal through (the Olympics deadline) has now been completely negated. Will they think again? We all beg them to. But our Labour-run Council's track record of arrogance and wilfulness makes that prospect very unlikely. So, can I urge your readers to donate generously to the Wards' Corner Coalition to help fund their legal appeal at the Royal Courts of Justice? It's not too late to save this wonderful building, people's livelihoods and homes. For more information on how you can help, visit http://wardscorner.wikispaces.com/ Alternatively, call me on 020 8885 6492 and I'll point you in the right direction. The Ward's Corner Coalition is supported by many people of all political persuasions and none.

Yours faithfully,
