As Utah Lawmakers and Lt. Governor visit Arizona to Study the Impact of SB1070,
Thomas A. Saenz of MALDEF Visits Utah

SALT LAKE CITY, UT, September 27, 2010. Thomas A. Saenz, President and General Legal Counsel of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF), will be the keynote speaker at the Latin American Chamber of Commerce's (LACC) Excellence Awards.  The event is on Thursday, September 30, 2010 from 6pm to 9pm at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center located at 1355 W. 3100 South in West Valley City, UT. Mr. Saenz will speak around 7:30 pm and will be available after for a press conference to speak to the media. The event is FREE. For tickets, reservations or more information, call  801.649.5465  801.649.5465 .

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
In light of the presentation of a bill proposal that echoes Arizona SB1070 by Representative Stephen Sandstrom and attempts by Utah politicians to dilute the intent and language in the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution as it references birthright citizenship, it was appropriate to address inaccurate information disseminated by anti-immigrant groups and their sympathizers. Saenz's Utah visit is made possible by both the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and the LACC. LULAC has recently expanded its presence into Utah with newly formed councils.

Juan M. Ruiz, President of the LACC, states "This event is designed to highlight and celebrate the contributions of Utah's Latino businesses. We are thrilled to have for the first time a prominent national civil rights leader of the caliber of Thomas Saenz addressing Utah's thriving Latino business community on their challenges as Utah seems to be following in Arizona's footsteps".

"Having the president and legal counsel of one of the oldest and most reputable Hispanic/Latino organizations visiting our state highlights the critical nature of these times for Utah's Hispanic/Latino community and the disastrous impact that bad public policy would have in the economy and communities across the state."  Senator Luz Robles, Utah State Senate District 1.

Mickie Solorio Luna, Vice President, Far West Region, National LULAC announced, "LULAC membership in Utah has grown explosively in a very short amount of time. We are pleased to formally announce our presence in the state at this event and extend a warm invitation to learn more about LULAC and join a local council. "

Saenz served at MALDEF for 12 years prior to serving under Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, after which time he returned to MALDEF as its President and Chief Legal Counsel. During his time at MALDEF, he successfully challenged California's unconstitutional Proposition 187 and led numerous civil rights cases in the areas of immigrants' rights, education, employment, and voting rights. He graduated summa cum laude from Yale University and received his Juris Doctor from Yale Law School.
