Utah Dares to DREAM
Community Urges Senators Hatch and Bennett to Stand Up for an American Dream, the DREAM Act
Salt Lake City, UT – Senate Majority Harry Reid announced last week that he will move the DREAM Act as an attachment to the Defense Authorization Bill, "This amendment will ensure that millions of children who grow up as Americans will be able to get the education they need to contribute to our economy. Students who come to America before age 16 and who have been here for five years should be able get their green card after they go to college or serve in the military. And many who have volunteered to defend our country can finally become citizens of it."
All over the nation, students, community members, religious leaders and organizations are urging their representatives to support the DREAM Act. Utah is also making their voice heard by encouraging Senators Orrin Hatch and Bob Bennett to support and vote YES on the DREAM Act next week. "We know that senator Hatch supported undocumented students and the DREAM Act in 2007 when it was also attached to DOD. He has the power to make thousands of American Dreams come true in 2010. Senator Bob Bennett also voted yes for the DREAM Act in 2007 and we are asking him to be a champion for education and make history in Utah." – Jose Hernandez, Co-Chair, Salt Lake DREAM Team
On Monday, September 20, 2010 undocumented youth, community leaders and University of Utah professors will come together in front of the Federal Building (125 South State Street Salt Lake City, UT 84138) where the Senators' offices are located, and will hold various events throughout the day that will highlight the importance of passing the DREAM Act. If passed, the DREAM Act would allow the nation's best and brightest undocumented youth to contribute back to the country through education or by joining the armed forces. With a $600 million Border Security Bill, a record number of deportations and a drop in illegal entries by immigrants, the time to pass the DREAM Act could not be more precise.
The schedule of events is as follows (all events will be held in front of the Federal Building):
10:00AM - Press Conference
11:30AM - DREAMers Testimonials
1:00 PM - Teach –In
5:00 PM - 11:00 PM Vigil
###
Salt Lake DREAM Team is a group of students and community members working toward the empowerment of American immigrant youth and the passage of the DREAM Act.
