World increasingly exposed to disaster risks

The amount of global wealth vulnerable to natural and man-made disasters has nearly tripled over the past 40 years from $525.7 billion to $1.58 trillion, according to a report from the UN disaster risk unit. "As we have learned again and again, no country or city -- rich or poor -- is immune," Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said at a UN conference in Geneva. "I urge President Assad to heed the call of the people for reform and freedom and desist from the mass arrest of peaceful demonstrators, and to cooperate with the human rights monitors."

"About 800 people have been killed in protests so far, and several thousand people have been detained. Equally clear, so far, is that the Syrian government has no problem with brutally suppressing this revolt."
