| - Private funding is needed for UN climate effort
A report by a subscription-based service that advises businesses on clean energy and carbon markets recommends that the Green Climate Fund, an outgrowth of UN climate talks last year in Cancun, Mexico, seek private donations to raise billions in climate aid instead of relying on funds from cash-strapped industrialized countries. Without a network of treaties and financial incentives designed to lower risks, and attract private investors, the pledge to channel $100 billion annually by 2020 is "a recipe for failure," says Michael Liebreich, chief executive officer of Bloomberg New Energy Finance. Bloomberg (8/31) - Laser could be used in anti-malaria fight
In an interview, Nathan Myhrvold, the former chief technology officer of Microsoft, discusses the scope of scientific research funded by his company, Intellectual Ventures, in particular a project that uses super-fast lasers to target female, egg-laying mosquitoes, thus reducing the spread of malaria. "We have ways of shooting mosquitoes out of the sky with lasers," Myhrvold says. "It's possible to use lasers and digital image processing techniques to not only find mosquitoes -- determine what's a mosquito and what's a fly or a butterfly or something else -- but also to determine the gender of the mosquito." A rape survivor in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo is helping to provide other rape survivors not only with support and counseling, but a means to earn a living through farming. "Here in Congo, they go into villages and loot. And after looting, they never leave without raping. That's why I say we've become weapons of war in Congo," says the woman, Masika. Sub-Saharan Africa has made significant progress address the region's water supply issue, but a growing worldwide water crisis continues to risk cross-border conflict, the World Bank warned in a recent report.
