Obama extols freedom of expression, importance of UN role in global cooperation

U.S. President Barack Obama called upon nations of the world to "rally against bigotry and blasphemy and lift up the values of understanding and mutual respect" in a speech Tuesday before the United Nations General Assembly. "The strongest weapon against hateful speech is not repression, it is more speech," said Obama, who also paid tribute to slain Ambassador Christopher Stevens and his investment "in the international cooperation that the UN represents." "It is time to heed the words of Gandhi: 'Intolerance is itself a form of violence and an obstacle to the growth of a true democratic spirit.' Together, we must work towards a world where we are strengthened by our differences, and not defined by them."
