A primer for the UN General Assembly's 67th session

While the 67th session of the United Nations General Assembly began Tuesday, most world leaders aren't slated to arrive until next week. While the ongoing crisis in Syria and Iran's nuclear program are certain to be discussed, observers say other issues likely to be spotlighted are anti-American protests across the Muslim world and the Palestinian bid for membership in the world body. • UN says DR Congo rebellion "has to stop"
The United Nations is trying to bring Rwandan and Congolese leaders to the negotiating table in a bid to end the growing humanitarian crisis in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where M23 rebels linked to warlord Bosco Ntaganda reportedly have established a de facto administration. "There are too many victims, too much suffering, too many displaced persons and refugees," Herve Ladsous, head of peacekeeping at the world body, told the Security Council on Tuesday. African Union forces from Kenya are gearing up for an assault on the Somali city of Kismayo in what observers say would mark a final offensive against al-Shabaab militants.
