Tell the Candidates, Don't Forget Haiti!

Hey Supporter,

As the election season kicks into high gear, there will be several issues hotly debated. Amidst all of the talk, we need to make sure that one topic isn’t forgotten: Haiti.

Write a letter to President Obama and Governor Romney reminding them that much work remains to be done to help Haiti!

Not sure what to write? Feel free to use our suggested text here. However, it's always better in your own words!

Almost three years after the earthquake, Haitians continue to deal with impact of the humanitarian crisis. Though $3.06 billion in private donations and much more in international bilateral and multilateral relief have been spent in Haiti, it is difficult to see the impact of these dollars while most fundamental needs of Haitians for housing, health care, food and education are not being met.  Over 369,000 people continue to live in temporarily constructed relief camps or “tent camps” that were set up after the January 2010 earthquake and do not meet minimum health or safety standards. After the earthquake about 47 percent of housing in Port-au-Prince was destroyed and damaged, which leaves many Haitians with few housing options aside from tent camps. People are now being forcefully evicted, sometimes illegally, from some of these camps, by both the government and private land owners. The cholera outbreak has taken the lives of 7,558 Haitians as of September 6th, 2012.

The next President of the United States must continue to help Haiti, but must do it with greater opportunities for Haitian civil society to participate in and determine priorities for reconstruction and sustainable development. We, including our future President, are responsible for the commitment that we have made to the Haitian people.

Make your voice heard today as we join up with many other organizations to collect letters from across the nation to personally hand to the presidential candidates.

These letters will show that American people still care deeply about what happens in Haiti and that we want our leaders to do more.

This letter will be compiled with letters from other organizations. The contents of this compilation, including your name, city and state, will therefore exist in a public document. Please feel free to write your own message or use the pre-written letter.

Subject: We cannot forget about Haiti

Following the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti, the United States government has shown strong support for the Haitian people in their time of need.  Yet nearly three years after the earthquake, urgent problems still require attention. Haiti’s needs include construction of permanent affordable housing, stopping the spread of cholera, and an emphasis on local production.  And this recovery must be done with greater participation by Haitian civil society organizations if it is to meet the needs of the Haitian people.

The United States government must continue to prioritize its support for the Haitian people. If you are elected as our next president, I ask that your administration will support a just and sustainable recovery for Haiti in the coming years.

Yours sincerely,
