Alerta del Secretariado Permanente de la Red Latinoamericana y del Caribe para la Democracia (Redlad): prenden fuego a periodista durante programa radial que denunciaba contrabando en el sur Bolivia.

El Secretariado Permanente de la Red Latinoamericana y del Caribe para la Democracia (Redlad) alerta sobre el ataque incendiario realizado en contra del periodista Fernando Vidal en Bolivia, mientras transmitía un programa de radio.

 

El periodista de 70 años y coordinador de Radio Popular de Yacuiba en el Gran Chaco, al sur de Bolivia, fue rociado con gasolina y quemado mientras estaba al aire en un programa de radio en donde denunciaba hechos de corrupción y contrabando.

 

Los radioescuchas realizaron inmediatamente una manifestación de apoyo al periodista en las afueras de la radio, lo llevaron al hospital más cercano pero no pudieron evitar que el inmueble y el equipo de la emisora fueran consumidos por las llamas.

 

El periodista, se encuentra estable pero presenta más de un 40% de su superficie corporal con quemaduras de tercer grado.

 

La Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa (SIP) ha calificado el ataque como cruel y contrario a la libertad de prensa, igualmente, la Asociación Nacional de la Prensa de Bolivia (ANP)  resaltó la ausencia de voluntad política y judicial para esclarecer los hechos de violencia contra medios de comunicación y periodistas.
 

Amanda Dávila, ministra de Comunicación boliviana, condenó el atentado y aseguró que el Gobierno trabajará en aclarar los hechos, también manifestó que la agresión podría deberse a una venganza por parte de los contrabandistas afectados por las actividades denunciadas en el programa radial.

 

El Secretariado Permanente de la Redlad, plataforma de impulso a la democracia, los derechos humanos y libertades fundamentales como la libertad de prensa y expresión, integrada por más de 450 organizaciones, redes y medios de comunicación independiente, Miembro Oficial del Foro de Sociedad Civil de la Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA) y Capítulo Regional del Movimiento Mundial por la Democracia (WMD):

 

* Se une a la organización Amnistía Internacional y solicita una investigación imparcial e independiente por parte de la justicia boliviana, así como un proceso judicial basado en plazos razonables.

 

* Urge al gobierno del presidente Evo Morales para que ejecute iniciativas prontas, concretas y de alcance nacional que permitan y aseguren realmente el respeto de las libertades fundamentales como libertad de prensa, expresión, asociación y reunión en todo el país.

 

* Insta a los medios de comunicación del continente, organizaciones de la sociedad civil defensoras de la libertad de prensa y gobiernos democráticos para que condenen los hechos y exijan el respeto y protección de la libertad de prensa y expresión en Bolivia y el mundo entero.

 

* Hace un llamado a la Relatoría Especial para la Libertad de Expresión de la Organización de Estados Americanos y a los gobiernos de la región para que establezcan medidas prontas y de alcance regional para la protección de periodistas y medios de comunicación, asegurando la libertad de prensa y expresión en las Américas.

The Permanent Secretariat of the Latin American and Caribbean Network for Democracy (Redlad) warns about the arson attack against journalist Fernando Vidal in Bolivia, during a radio broadcast.

 

The journalist of 70 years and coordinator of  Radio Popular of Yacuiba in the Gran Chaco, southern Bolivia, was doused with gasoline and burned while he was on the air in a radio program in which he denounced acts of corruption and smuggling.

 

Listeners immediately held a demonstration in support of journalist outside of the radio, Fernando Vidal was taken to the nearest hospital but the people could not prevent the property and equipment of the station were consumed by the flames.

 

The journalist is stable but has more than 40% of body surface with third degree burns.

 

The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) has described the attack as cruel and contrary to the freedom of the press, also, the National Press Association of Bolivia (ANP) highlighted the lack of political and judicial fact-finding of violence against media and journalists.

 

Amanda Davila, Bolivian Minister of Communication, condemned the attack and said the government will work to clarify the facts, also said that the attack could be due to a vendetta by smugglers affected by the activities alleged in the radio program.

 

The Permanent Secretariat of Redlad, platform for democracy, human rights and fundamental freedoms such as freedom of speech and press, comprising more than 450 organizations, networks and independent media, Official Member of the Civil Society Forum of the Organization of American States (OAS) and Regional Chapter of the World Movement for Democracy (WMD):

 

* It joins to the organization Amnesty International and requests an impartial and independent investigation by the Bolivian justice and a judicial process based on reasonable deadlines.

 

* Urges the government of President Evo Morales to run initiatives prompt, specific and generals that really ensure respect for fundamental freedoms such as freedom of press, speech, association and assembly throughout the country.

 

* Urges the mainland media, civil society organizations that defend press freedom and democratic governments to condemn the facts and demand the respect and protection of freedom of speech and press in Bolivia and worldwide.

 

* It calls on the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the Organization of American States and the governments of the region to establish early action and with regional scope to protect journalists and media, ensuring freedom of speech and press in the Americas.
