Trilateral talks underway in Geneva on Syrian conflict
United Nations-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi is meeting with Gennady Gatilov, Russia's deputy foreign minister, and Wendy Sherman, U.S. undersecretary of state, in hopes of galvanizing peace talks between the Syrian government and rebels. Meanwhile, Russia has discussed draft resolutions for the Security Council -- one is a counterproposal on humanitarian aid to Syria and the other addresses what it describes as "terrorism." Humanitarian aid cease-fire extended for 3 days in Syria
The cease-fire in Homs, Syria, is being extended through Saturday, enabling additional aid deliveries and evacuations. As of today, 1,400 civilians have been rescued from Homs, according to Homs Gov. Talal al-Barazi. Reuters (2/13)

Women still lack political, economic power, UNPF report says
In the 20 years since the International Conference on Population and Development, progress has been made in education and reproductive rights, but women still lack equality in economic and political arenas, says a United Nations Population Fund report. "In no country are women fully equal to men in political or economic power, yet while most states are progressing (albeit slowly) toward gender equality, in a number of states the rights and autonomy of women are being curtailed," the report says. Central African Republic President Catherine Samba-Panza is seeking to halt Christian militia violence against Muslims in the strife-torn country. Syrian airstrikes continue on town near border with Lebanon
The Syrian government continues to bombard the rebel-held town of Yabroud near the Lebanon border. Civilians displaced by the fighting are crossing into Lebanon.
