Women's movement has brought social change, but more needed
Despite a growing backlash in certain countries, the women's movement has been responsible for profound and positive social changes in recent decades, according to activists. "Deeper and more inclusive change in the status of women can only be achieved by demand-driven approaches -- by mobilising women and building their collective power to act together for their vision of a more just society," write Anna Turley, Zohra Moosa and Srilatha Batliwala. The international community has become aware that successful development is that which is sustainable, says United Nations Foundation President and CEO Kathy Calvin. "It's no longer about donors giving aid to recipients; it's about a partnership of both sides, and both sides have to take responsibility and plan for it," she says. UN official: Many cookstove designs fail to meet needs of world's poor
Cookstoves that reduce health hazards are in demand, but many designs fail to account for the complex social, cultural and food environments of the people who use them, said T. Alexander Aleinikoff, UN deputy high commissioner for refugees. "[W]hat does it cook? What is the food refugees want to cook? When do they cook it? How does it fit into their social and cultural patterns?" Aleinikoff said. The Guardian (London)/Guardian Sustainable Business blog (2/7)
