| - UNRWA leads summer camps for Gaza children
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency summer camp in the Gaza Strip has more than 250,000 participants, making it the largest of existing summer programs for area children. Hamas runs a camp focused on its ideology and the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs also runs a camp structured around Quranic teachings, both of which have criticized UNRWA for focusing on activities such as swimming and other sports. UNRWA beach camp sites have come under attack twice this summer from militants. Slate (7/27) - Security Council mulls future of Darfur mission

Four women die every hour from complications during pregnancy or labor, making the Democratic Republic of Congo one of the most dangerous places in the world to be pregnant, according to an assessment from the United Nations Population Fund. Half of Congolese females give birth before age 19, often without access to qualified medical personnel or equipment. The Toronto Star (7/28) - Gulf surface oil slick is gone, but dangers remain
The Deepwater Horizon oil spill that covered hundreds of square miles in the Gulf of Mexico has largely disappeared thanks to cleanup efforts, the Gulf's natural oil eating bacteria and two recent storms that helped disperse the massive slick. Researchers warn the absence of surface oil does not eliminate threats to marine life and the Gulf Coast as oil, dispersant chemicals and other pollutants remain underwater. The videos have made whistle-blower Aleksei Dymovsky famous and prompted other Russians to make video appeals. Putin has yet to respond, but the Interior Ministry denied the charges and the Russian parliament is debating a law to increase penalties for police personnel who criticize superior officers. The New York Times (free registration) (7/27) - China looks to quell outrage with new shaming policy
Chinese authorities have issued new regulations to end a security forces practice of publicly shaming criminal suspects. The New York Times (free registration) (7/27) - International terror networks taking root in DR Congo?

Interviews with recent defectors have provided evidence of foreigners visiting ADF-NALU camps on the mountains of eastern DR Congo.
