He was formally arrested by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) for possession of his traditional medicine Ayahuasca. He is now being charged as a federal criminal and is facing up to 20 years in federal prison. Taita Juan is certified by his community and by the Colombian ministry of health as a traditional healer.  He is  one of the few remaining indigenous spiritual leaders in the world that holds the ancestral medicinal knowledge of an ecosystem that is rapidly disappearing. Taita Juan is a father, a husband and a godfather to more than 20 children.  With more than 3000 supporters from several countries in the world, his life and work have touched many. In addition to being recognized by the Colombian Ministry of Health, he is a recognized lineage holder of traditional Amazonian medicine and an established healer and leader in his community. Since his childhood, Taita Juan has been learning traditional medicine practices from his father Taita Martin and has studied with many elders throughout the Amazon. Taita Juan has over 20 years of experience working with 'yajé' (Ayahuasca) and other forms of traditional medicine. He has extensive experience in treating multifaceted aspects of mind, body, and spirit and he is well versed in healing conditions that are not treated well by other forms of medicine. His ongoing ceremonies offer a unique opportunity to experience traditional Amazonian medicine in an authentic way. At his home in Sibundoy, Taita Juan is developing a traditional medicine clinic. He is a leader in addressing public health needs in his community as well as in serving thousands of individuals from all parts of the world who regularly visit Sibundoy seeking his services. Taita Juan is leading efforts to build educational ethnobotanical gardens in his home to ensure that knowledge of traditional medicine continues to be passed down to younger generations.  He is a highly skilled and inspired artist experienced in the arts of woodcarving, painting, and beadwork. In partnership with his wife Carmen, he runs "Artesania Basoy" a store that trades indigenous artwork in the heart of Sibundoy.  Their family business provides employment for several single mothers in the community and they are involved in creating innovative and original designs that delight all who visit. Taita has an incredible sense of humor and the warmth of his spirit and heart extends to those around him. For all his contributions, Taita Juan is esteemed and loved by many. 'Taita' is a term of respect used by indigenous communities of the northwest Amazon to acknowledge traditional healers who work with Ayahuasca; it is a word for father.   Case Info On Tuesday, October 19, 2010 while en route to Oregon to offer traditional Ayahuasca ceremonies, Cametsa traditional healer and Colombian national, Taita Juan Bautista Agreda Chindoy was detained in the Houston International Airport. His baggage was searched and he was formally arrested by ICE (Immigration, Customs, and Enforcement) for possession of his ancestral medicine, 'Yaje' or 'Ayahuasca'. Upon revealing the presence of DMT in the liquid medicine, he was charged with possession with intent to distribute a "Schedule 1 Drug". After a judge found probable cause for Taita Juan's conviction on Friday, October 22, he is now being held in Joe Corley Federal Detention Facility in Conroe, in the vicinity of Houston, Texas. Since then, a group of his close friends and students have been working around the clock to build his legal defense and to support him and his family in Colombia. Based on the charges Juan is facing up to 20 years in federal prison. Due to the outpouring of support, we have developed the strongest legal team possible to effectively defend Taita Juan's rights.
