UN chief pitches U.S. Congress for continued funding

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday told U.S. lawmakers that the world body requires "robust financial support" from the country even as conservatives advocate cutting the scale of the American contribution, which accounts for 22% of the general budget and 27% of its peacekeeping costs.     UNESCO has awarded Iranian journalist Ahmad Zeidabadi with the Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize for "his exceptional courage, resistance and commitment to freedom of expression, democracy, human rights, tolerance and humanity." Zeidabadi is serving a six-year jail sentence on charges of plotting to overthrow the Iranian government through a "soft revolution," and faces an additional five years of internal exile as well as a lifetime ban from reporting in Iran.
