[RED DEMOCRATICA] An Anaylsis of Syria

Dear Friend,

It has been a busy week for those of us following the situation in Syria. At the beginning of the week Syrian President Bashir Al-Assad upped the ante of his reign of terror by turning gunships on residents of a coastal town. Just yesterday, President Obama made a bold move in telling Assad to step down from power and let the Syrian people decide their future. Our CEO, Don Kraus, just wrote an op-ed discussing these developments, as well as suggestions for future United Nations Security Council action.  An excerpt of the op-ed is below, but to read the article in its entirety click here.

"In Syria, blood is being hosed off of the streets. Gunship strikes terrorize unarmed protestors in the coastal town of Latakia.  The L.A. Times quotes a Syrian student saying "Entire buildings are being shelled with heavy artillery. The bodies stay on the streets because we are unable to leave our home and get them... The smell of death is around us."

In Washington, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called for sanctions against Syrian oil and gas exports and urged "those countries still sending Assad weapons, those countries whose political and economic support give him comfort in his brutality, to get on the right side of history." Flanked by Secretary of  Defense Leon Panetta, Clinton talked about utilizing "smart power",  "where it is not just brute force, it is not just unilateralism," but rather bringing together nations supporting  "universal freedom, human rights, democracy, everything that we have stood for and pioneered over 235 years."

This is all sounding eerily familiar.  Is Syria shaping up to follow in the footsteps of Libya, Darfur, the Congo and other conflicts, where mass atrocities result in international handwringing, declarations, and half measures that allow more conflict and civilian deaths?" Click here to continue reading.

Be sure to check out the rest of the piece to see what we think needs to happen next.
