UN is poised for arrival of Syria humanitarian mission

The Syrian regime has pledged unfettered access to areas of reported fighting when the United Nations sends a special humanitarian mission Saturday, said Valerie Amos, the world body's head of humanitarian affairs. Prior UN requests to send humanitarian observers had been rebuffed until Wednesday, when Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon spoke with President Bashar al-Assad by phone. "This week Libyan rebels took the city of Az Zawiya, which contains Libya's last working oil refinery. The loss of the town cut the territory Gaddafi controls into two and brought the rebels within just 30 miles of Tripoli. The outcome of the battle in Az Zawiya makes an eventual rebel victory a virtual certainty, but what will the fall of Gaddafi look like?"

  • UN official criticizes Mbeki over Ivorian crisis
The chief of staff to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has criticized Thabo Mbeki, who served as African Union mediator during conflict in Cote d'Ivoire, saying that the former South African president was wrong to assert that the country should not have staged a presidential election last fall. Laurent Gbagbo, who was removed from power after refusing to honor the election results, has been detained with his wife, Simone, on charges that they committed "economic crimes." • Research is targeting affordable, safe polio vaccine
The use of oral polio vaccines, which contain live but weakened strains of the virus, is being discouraged because the live viruses occasionally become virulent. The World Health Organization has been working with Dutch researchers to develop a safe, effective and affordable vaccine that is inactivated -- meaning the virulent strains are killed before the vaccine is given -- and can be produced in developing countries. • Climate change prompts migrations, study says
A study suggests that animal and plant species are adapting to a warming planet by relocating -- in some cases, up to three times faster than previously thought. "These changes are equivalent to animals and plants shifting away from the equator at around 20 centimeters per hour, for every hour of the day, for every day of the year" over the past 40 years, said Chris Thomas, professor of conservation biology at Britain's York University, who led the research.
