Friends, Like you, I am dismayed at the inability of the federal government to make positive decisions regarding our federal budget. What you may not know is that during the recent debt-ceiling debate, anti-international legislators came out opposed to paying our fair share of U.N. dues. Right now the United Nations is working on many urgent problems around the globe: - Humanitarian Aid: Bringing life-saving aid to people starving in drought afflicting Somalia and the Horn of Africa.
- Protecting Civilians: Working to protect the people of Syria from violence by their own government.
- Peacekeeping: Blue-helmeted U.N. peacekeepers are successfully maintaining peace in 17 countries, including Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
As an important global leader, the U.S. should now more than ever be willing to pay the amount it owes the U.N. in full and on time. At Citizens for Global Solutions, we are working to educate Americans on our interdependency with the rest of the world and to explain why it is essential that we pay our U.N. dues. We know that it is "penny wise and pound foolish" to obstruct paying U.N. dues. Many issues the U.N. addresses are issues that, if left to fester, the U.S. will need to address later with greater difficulty and at greater expense. Please support our work with a donation. With this appeal we are asking everyone to give $5. It is a small amount -- less than what most of us will pay for the next dessert we have after a meal. But small amounts from many people can make a big difference. Frankly, the amount the U.S. pays to support the activities of the United Nations is a small amount too. But it makes a critical difference. International assistance makes up about 1% of the U.S. budget. And funding for the U.N. is about 0.05% of that! Those of us who understand that the world is interconnected and that we need to work together to solve global problems need to make our voices heard in Washington. We know that dues paid to the U.N. bring tremendous immediate benefits and represent a valuable long-term investment. Please help us carry on this important work with your donation. Thank you for your support, Robert A. Enholm Executive Vice President Citizens for Global Solutions P.S.
