Kyoto pact could be extended over rich-world objections

The top climate diplomat at the United Nations says negotiators will seek to extend the Kyoto Protocol during talks next December in Durban, South Africa, even if it means excluding Japan, Canada and Russia. Christiana Figueres praised the European Union for "building a bridge" between rich and poor countries, and singled out the U.S. -- which has refused to recognize Kyoto, now set to expire in 2012 -- for failing to meet its responsibilities as one of the world's biggest polluters. "It's been 10 years since the start of the American invasion that toppled the Taliban regime and ushered in the current era in Afghanistan's history. But that's not really correct. The invasion was only one part of the picture in those final, cold, bloody months of the Taliban government's five-year hold on power."

  • Emissions must factor into stock computations, UN says
Stock markets around the world are incorrectly valuing the companies they list because the costs of emissions of greenhouse gases are not part of the equation, said Christiana Figueres, UN climate chief. Companies that invest in low-carbon technologies should be distinguished from those that emit large quantities of climate-warming gases, she said. The sexual violence endemic in places such as Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone -- where 26% of the rape victims treated in one clinic are 11 years old or younger -- warrants strong consideration by the U.S. for support of the International Violence Against Women Act, writes Nicholas Kristof. "The pattern is that after peace arrives, men stop shooting each other but continue to rape women and girls at staggering rates -- and often at staggeringly young ages."
