Turner: Focus on helping women to manage population growth

Placing an increased focus on meeting the education and development needs of women can help the world meet challenges associated with population expansion, writes Ted Turner, founder and chairman of the United Nations Foundation. Turner advocates increased funding to support universal access to family planning services as a way to help women manage health concerns, reduce maternal and child mortality deaths and give women better opportunities to act on income-generating enterprises. "The conundrum in online news -- particularly if you're interested in niche topics, such as humanitarian or global health news -- is that the news you want is out there, but it can literally take hours to find; Which is why the DAWNS Digest and similar aggregators, such as UN Wire (a service of the UN Foundation) and the Kaiser Daily Global Health Report, provide an essential service."

The regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was condemned Saturday in statements by both the Arab League and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in the wake of one of the deadliest single-day death tolls since popular revolt swept the country more than seven months ago. In an interview, al-Assad warned Western powers of creating "another Afghanistan" should they intervene, as NATO effectively ruled out trying to establish a no-fly zone over the country.
