9th District GOP candidate says near-death experience spurred public service
Paterson physician Hector Castillo said he almost died on the operating table in 2008 when his breathing and heart briefly stopped seven hours into what became a 13-hour surgery.
"You rebooted," Castillo said his doctor told him. Ever since, he said, he has rededicated himself to public service —one reason he's running for the Republican primary for the 9th Congressional District.
"I'm going to do what I can to make life better for everybody," Castillo, 56, told The Record editorial board Thursday.
He acknowledged that he faces an uphill battle. The winner of the three-man June 5 Republican primary will oppose either Rep. Steve Rothman, D-Englewood, or Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr. D-Paterson, whose fierce primary race has overshadowed the GOP contest in the heavily Democratic district that includes parts of Bergen, Passaic and Hudson counties.
The other GOP candidates are Blase Billack, a pharmaceutical science professor from Saddle Brook, and Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, an author and media personality from Englewood.
Running long-shot campaigns is nothing new for Castillo, who previously lost races for Paterson mayor,Passaic County freeholder and as an independent candidate for governor in 2005.
His politics both embrace and defy some of the Republican party's traditional platforms. He is anti-abortion, citing his experience as a doctor in delivering babies and his own near-death experience.
He generally opposes higher taxes for the wealthiest income earners, arguing that their investments tend to create new jobs for other people.
He favors enforcement of existing federal laws on immigration but said he had no position on the stricter immigration laws adopted by Arizona.
On health care, however, he favors extending Medicare to the uninsured rather than mandating health insurance through the Affordable Health Care Act. That's a position both Pascrell and Rothman said they would favor if the Supreme Court strikes down key provisions of the health care law
