1. Global maternal deaths down 47% in 20 years
Deaths of women from complications during pregnancy and childbirth in 2010 were only half of the total 20 years earlier, according to a report released today by United Nations agencies and the World Bank. Nearly all maternal deaths -- most of which are preventable -- occur in the developing world. Washington Post, The (05/16) Channel NewsAsia (05/16)

2. How can Africa aim for its MDG goals?
The sometimes-spectacular economic growth across Africa is not necessarily lifting all people out of poverty, and the Africa Progress Panel is encouraging governments this year to work on millennium development goals set to expire in 2015. "Not every country in Africa can reach every target, but every country can go further and faster," said former United Nations chief Kofi Annan, who heads the panel. Nearly half of Africans earn less than $1.25 a day. Guardian (London), The (05/11)

3. Rio+20 is a chance to become more sustainable, says WWF report
Humanity's patterns of migration, energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions are outpacing the Earth's ability to replenish itself, according to a report by the conservation group WWF. "The Rio+20 conference next month is an opportunity for the world to get serious about the need for development to become sustainable. Our report indicates that we haven't yet done that since the last Rio summit," said David Nussbaum, CEO of WWF's U.K. office. AlertNet (05/15) Guardian (London), The (05/15)

4. U.S. support of UN, dues payment are crucial
The spending plan for 2013 being considered by a U.S. House committee would fall $400 million short of the U.S. commitment to the United Nations, undermining U.S. security interests and abnegating the will of the voters, writes Peter Yeo, vice president of public policy for the United Nations Foundation. "At a time when Americans want our dollar to go farther, this bill unnecessarily targets UN agencies -- the very vehicles we need to make that happen," he writes. "It contradicts what voters want, and we must speak out." Hill, The (05/17)

5. UN peacekeeping chief discusses challenges of Syria cease-fire
Herve Ladsous, head of peacekeeping for the United Nations, talks about the ongoing violence in Syria and the specific challenges -- such as the attack Tuesday on a UN convoy -- facing monitors. "Those roads are unsafe. There are opposition elements, government elements. There are also third parties on the ground, you know, unknown groups who have been responsible over the last several days for many attacks, explosions," Ladsous said. There are expected to be more than 250 monitors in Syria by the end of today. Separately, the Better World Campaign has launched the "Thank A Peacekeeper" campaign. National Public Radio (text and audio) (05/16)
