Saving lives of children by supporting vaccines

Few Americans can remember when people suffering from polio were placed in iron lungs, but it is a vision that Andrew Young, former ambassador to the United Nations, says he will never forget. Young reminds Americans that a child somewhere in the world dies from a preventable disease every 20 seconds, and that a donation of only $20 would protect a child against diseases including polio and measles. "Georgian officials are deeply concerned that Moscow would respond to western military action against Iran by trying to fortify its military base in Armenia, and use that base as a launching pad to protect Russian interests in Iran."

  • Disease epidemics are feared among Sudan refugees
Outbreaks of infectious diseases such as measles are possible in the Nuba mountains of Sudan, where families have fled fighting, say physicians assisting child refugees. United Nations agencies are being asked to do more to deliver medical aid, but the region along the border with South Sudan is unsafe, and Sudan's president has banned most operations by agencies in the area. • Afghan hospital system stays neutral, treats all
The nonprofit Emergency Surgical Center for War Victims in Kabul, Afghanistan, has a small international staff of surgeons and nurses who have maintained a reputation for being neutral: Civilians, Taliban insurgents and government security forces are all patients. Last year, the Italian-based nonprofit treated nearly 360,000 patients nationwide at its three hospitals and 34 clinics. • Well water: A one-way contributor to rising oceans
Water is being pumped from deep underground reservoirs at a rate faster than rains can replenish them, and the runoff is contributing more to the global rise in sea levels than melting glaciers, according to research published in Nature Geoscience. "In the long run, I would still be more concerned about the impact of climate change, but this work shows that even if we stabilize the climate, we might still get sea level rise due to how we use water," said Robert Nicholls, an expert on sea levels at the University of Southampton. • Small poppy crop could shape Afghan endgame
The blight that has devastated Afghanistan's poppy crop and reduced revenue to the Taliban insurgency is being hailed by provincial leaders in Helmand, a poppy hub, as a "divine decree" by Allah. The small crop is likely to hurt small farmers, too. The Wall Street Journal (5/20) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
