Global maternal deaths down 47% in 20 years

Deaths of women from complications during pregnancy and childbirth in 2010 were only half of the total 20 years earlier, according to a report released today by United Nations agencies and the World Bank. Nearly all maternal deaths -- most of which are preventable -- occur in the developing world. "Daniel Nocera ... has designed 'a cheap, playing-card-size coated-silicon sheet that, when placed in a glass of tap water and exposed to sunlight, split the water into hydrogen and oxygen.' • UN's Ban: Make polio eradication a global priority
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon likens the spread of the wild polio virus to the spread of wildfire. "If neglected, they can spread out of control. If handled properly, they can be stamped out for good," writes Ban, who warns that the disease could migrate from Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan, where reported cases are on the rise. • Ground zero for malaria resistance is Myanmar
Resistance of malaria to the world's most touted treatment, artemisinin, is spreading in Myanmar and, unlike other countries where drug resistance is growing, the government is lagging in its containment efforts. Myanmar "is key to successful containment efforts because it is a chokepoint of sorts. ... While the threat to India and Africa isn't imminent, the situation in Burma requires an immediate response," write Jay Winsten and Trish Stroman. An animated Ratko Mladic was in court today at The Hague as prosecutors made their opening arguments in his trial for genocide in the deaths of 8,000 unarmed Muslim boys and men in Srebrenica in 1995. As the Bosnian Serb general arrived, he gave a thumbs-up sign, later giving an apparent taunting hand signal to survivors seated in the courtroom.
