How can Africa aim for its MDG goals?

The sometimes-spectacular economic growth across Africa is not necessarily lifting all people out of poverty, and the Africa Progress Panel is encouraging governments this year to work on millennium development goals set to expire in 2015. "Not every country in Africa can reach every target, but every country can go further and faster," said former United Nations chief Kofi Annan, who heads the panel. Nearly half of Africans earn less than $1.25 a day. The Guardian (London) (5/11) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

"As world leaders gather in Rio de Janiero for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development to negotiate and fine tune a series of agreements on development, energy, and sustainable growth, a more open 'people's forum' will be underway across town. This is Rio+Social. It is being put together by the same team that brought you the excellent Social Good Summit during UN Week in New York."

  • UN land framework provides path against hunger
Nonbinding guidelines to secure access rights to land, fisheries and forest resources for indigenous peoples have been adopted by the United Nations, but the voluntary framework will require nation buy-in to enforce. The directives -- following a decade of land selling or leasing of nearly 495 million acres, mainly in Africa and Asia -- are seen as a step toward alleviating world hunger. "The challenge now is for countries to adapt these guidelines to national conditions and needs before implementing them," writes José Graziano da Silva of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. • IAEA pressures Iran for access to military sites
Two-day talks are under way between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency ahead of higher-stakes talks slated for next week. The Carnegie Endowment's Mark Hibbs addresses nine questions about these talks and the role of IAEA in solving issues related to Iran's enrichment policies. • Putting world's poor moms first on Mother's Day
Mother's Day should serve to draw attention to the high rates of death of mothers during childbirth across the developing world, writes Maureen Greenwood-Basken, head of the Universal Access Project of the United Nations Foundation. She encourages Western "policymakers to think about these families, and put voluntary family planning at the top of the global development agenda." • Bed nets reduce malaria in Kenyan camp
Deaths from malaria have fallen among refugees living along the Sudan border with Kenya, and authorities are attributing the decline to the five-year Nothing But Nets campaign of the United Nations Foundation. Malaria was once was the leading cause of death among the tens of thousands of Sudanese refugees living in the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya, but it is now the fifth-leading cause. • Renewed hope for world's "pariah" women
An Ethiopian woman who was raped at about age 13 and suffered an obstetric fistula during childbirth is profiled by New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof in an effort, on Mother's Day, to draw attention to the more than 2 million women and girls who have fistulas worldwide, primarily in Asia and Africa. Mahabouba Mohammed eventually received medical care, recovered and later joined the nursing staff of the Ethiopian hospital where she was operated on by an American urologist. • Cambodians unite against illegal logging
The death of Chut Wutty, the prominent Cambodian environmental activist shot last month by military police, has served to galvanize people -- especially indigenous hill tribes -- against deforestation and illegal logging in the country's north. The killing drew a rebuke from United Nations special envoy Surya Subedi, who called for an end to the increasing use of armed force against human rights activists in the country.
