KAREN HYER, 3RD DISTRICT CANDIDATE, TO BOLDLY ADDRESS COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM
Karen Hyer, Who's Challenging Chaffetz, Shows Competent, Ethical Leadership by Having the Political Courage to Outline Real Solutions to the Immigration Crisis
Karen Hyer, the Democratic Nominee for Utah's Third Congressional District, is holding an event entitled, "An American Family Fiesta," this Saturday, July 10th at the East Pavilion in Centennial Park in West Valley City, from 12:00 noon – 2:00 p.m. (5415 W. 3100 S. in WVC) . Many Hispanic and other leaders in the Community, as well as concerned citizens, will be in attendance. There will be music and food, and at 12:30 p.m. Karen will address the attendees, outlining her vision of what effective immigration reform should look like.
"The atmosphere on this issue has gotten so heated that it's becoming more and more difficult to have a rational conversation about immigration," says Hyer. "Though we may not see eye to eye on everything, at least you know I'm serious about finding solutions that address the honest, valid concerns of people on all sides of the debate."
"While some people would prefer to use the immigration issue for political gain, capitalizing on it as a wedge issue or using their prejudices to spread fear, hate and misinformation, I plan to actually solve this problem thoughtfully and civilly," says Hyer. "To those who are insistent on exploiting partisanship, fear and hate, I say, 'vote for my opponent.' To those whose concerns are genuine, I say, 'Let's talk . . . we can solve this.'"
Hyer will discuss 10 essential elements of a workable plan for comprehensive immigration reform. "It's a given that we need to get control of our borders and fully enforce our immigration laws," says Hyer. "The real debate is about whether enforcement ALONE will take care of the problem, or whether we need other reforms to fix the system and strengthen enforcement. I believe COMPREHENSIVE immigration reform is the only way we'll get complete control of our borders and be able to fully and consistently enforce our laws."
Hyer believes we need to change the incentive structure so people will have a higher incentive to come legally than illegally. Among the 10 essential elements of a workable plan for comprehensive immigration reform is the need to bring the millions of undocumented immigrants who are currently here out of the shadows . . . without providing any form of amnesty. Her plan is conservative, yet thoughtful and humane. It will be a win for our economy, for families, for our security, and for American civility.
After formally addressing the immigration issue, Karen will be able to informally answer questions and listen to concerns, while others enjoy the atmosphere, food and music of the day.
