August 10th, 2011 Syria. What's Next? A week ago the Security Council released a Presidential Statement calling on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to lead a peaceful transformation of government from one that perpetrates crimes against humanity to one that respects and protects fundamental rights and freedoms. But a Presidential Statement is not enough - JOIN US in calling for a Security Council Resolution. The Western coalition of Britain, France, Germany, Portugal, and the United States support a resolution on Syria that would condemn the violence and gross human rights violations occurring there and refer President Bashar al-Assad to the International Criminal Court. While this coalition has been working to pass a resolution, an opposition coalition has formed in resistance to the resolution. Notably, China, Russia, Brazil, India and South Africa have been hesitant to support a resolution, considering it to be overstepping the Council's mandate. The Syrian people need the international community to demand justice and humanitarian assistance for them. Assad and his government have clearly demonstrated that they have no respect for the political will and fundamental rights of the Syrian people. The violence must end and the Assad regime must be held accountable. For this to happen, the UN Security Council must pass a resolution - join us and send an email to Susan Rice and the Ambassadors from China, Russia, Brazil, India and South Africa. Thanks for all you do, Anu Anu Joshi Director of Outreach |
