Treatment of injured UN peacekeepers thwarted by Sudan

Three UN peacekeepers wounded by a landmine in the Abyei region of Sudan died while waiting three hours for government permission to evacuate the soldiers by helicopter. "They prevented us from taking off by threatening to shoot at the helicopter," Alain Le Roy, the world body's undersecretary-general for peacekeeping, said Thursday. • Russia is singled out over UN response to Syrian crackdown
Rights groups and opponents of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Thursday criticized as inadequate the United Nations response to al-Assad's bloody crackdown on pro-democracy protests, with one activist characterizing the resistance by Russia to a resolution condemning the violence as "helping in the killing of Syrians." Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said he has told al-Assad that he will meet a "sad fate" if he does not introduce reforms and stop the violence, which U.S. officials said has killed 2,000.
