Debts, Deficits, and Development
The outcome of the current debate over the U.S. national debts and deficits will have implications for many parts of the national budget. Panelists will discuss the impact on the budgets for USAID, Department of State, and what it could mean for U.S. development policy.

China at a Crossroads: Distress Over Democratization or an Omen of Collapse?
Through an in-depth analysis of China's actual conditions on the ground–the "crossroads" it faces–this presentation will seek to suggest ways to make sense of China's uncertain future.

USG's Support for Free and Transparent Elections in the DRC
Against the backdrop of protracted instability in the eastern Kivu provinces and the new priorities of the UN's stabilizing mission in the DRC, the country is set to hold important presidential and legislative elections in November.

Inauguration Ceremony and Reception: ECNU-Wilson Center Cold War Studies Initiative
The Woodrow Wilson Center is pleased to announce an important new project, the ECNU-Wilson Center Cold War Studies Initiative which is a natural outgrowth of the longstanding, close relationship between the Wilson Center's flagship Cold War International History Project (CWIHP) and East China Normal University's (ECNU) Cold War International Studies Center.

The Phenomenon of Solidarity: Pictures From the History of Poland, 1980-1981
The Phenomenon of Solidarity commemorates the 30th anniversary of the founding of the movement, and highlights formative moments in its history. The exhibition traces key events, such as the strikes of August 1980 and the enforcement of Martial Law in December of 1981.

Director, President, and CEO Jane Harman appeared on CNN to discuss Pervez Musharraf's announcement that he'll return to Pakistan from exile to run for president in 2013. (7/22)

Debt Deal Politicking: We've Seen This Before
Don Wolfensberger, director of the Congress Project, writes an opinion column in Roll Call. Last month he published "Independence Day Stirs Thoughts on Origins," "Libya Motivates Members to Rally Together," and "Debt Deal Shows How Process Becomes Policy."

Musharraf in America
Asia Program Associate Michael Kugelman published an op-ed in Dawn about the United States' and Pakistan's sentiments toward former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf. He also explored what could happen if U.S.-Pakistan relations were severed in The Express Tribune; discussed the complex relationship between the CIA and Pakistan's Inter-Service Intelligence in Newsline; and analyzed the problems plaguing Pakistan's census on Foreign Policy's AfPak Channel. Age of Greed
Fellow David Greenberg reviewed Jeff Madrick's book Age of Greed, a narrative about business and economics, in The Washington Post. He also appeared on "The Conversation" on Seattle's KUOW to discuss his article in the latest issue of Wilson Quarterly, "Beyond the Bully Pulpit," and published an op-ed in Slate about a lack of seriousness to addressing anti-Semitism among the political Left. Spotlight on Bosnia
European Studies Senior Associate Nida Gelazis testified before Congress' Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, also known as the Helsinki Commission, as part of a briefing on Bosnia. (7/26)

The Hip-Hop Rhythm of Arab Revolt
USIP-Woodrow Wilson Center Distinguished Scholar Robin Wright published a piece in the Wall Street Journal presenting hip-hop's influence on revolutions in the Arab world, an adaptation from her new book, Rock the Casbah: Rage and Rebellion Across the Islamic World. She also discussed these cultural forces on PBS NewsHour, and the book was reviewed in the Los Angeles Times. (7/23)

Pamela Constable: "Playing With Fire"
Public Policy Scholar Pamela Constable appeared on "The Diane Rehm Show" to discuss her new book, Playing with Fire: Pakistan at War with Itself. (7/19)

Snatching Failure From the Jaws of Success
Senior Policy Scholar Bill Milam published an op-ed in The Independent (Bangladesh) about the need for the Bangladeshi government to take a new direction. (7/13)

Venezuela's Future
Latin American Program Director Cynthia Arnson appeared on Voice of America's "Encounter," where she discussed Hugo Chavez's illness and the implications for Venezuelan politics. (7/10)

The Return of Col. Chavez
Public Policy Scholar Jorge Heine published an op-ed in the Toronto Star on President Hugo Chavez's waning star among strengthening regional powers throughout the rest of South America. (7/6)

How Health Cuts Are Killing Women
Public Policy Scholar Anne Daguerre published an op-ed in the Guardian on the effect of budget cuts to health programs on already high maternal death rates in the U.S. (7/5)

The Final Countdown
Public Policy Scholar Julie Payette was interviewed by the Globe and Mail about her travel to the International Space Station and the legacy of the U.S. space shuttle program. (7/5)
