| (correo en espanol despues de las fotos) In NJ, we continue fighting for a humane policy of immigration. Twelve counties participated in the action "Let my people go" If you think that a law like SB1070 of Arizona would not be passed in NJ, you are mistaken. Dear Leaders of the State of New Jersey: Last Thursday, July 1st, more than 70 people united in a march, in front of the Family Court and County Court in Paterson . It ended with a vigil in the exterior of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, in front of the county jail located in that city. The prayers -for our immigrant brothers of Arizona- were conducted by Rev. Luis Rendon, Sister Jean Amore and Father Christopher VanHaight. This was one of the twelve events in this Statewide Day of Action supported by Imterfaith Immigramt Coalition and more than 40 state organizations.
The UNITY, was again our strength, and leaders of different communities made themselves present to support this action that closed the message of discontent with the lack of a humane policy of immigration. This action included a criticism at the slowness of Congress in passing a humane immigration reform that would give a dignified pathway to legal residency to twelve million human beings. The participants wanted a stop to the raids, an end to the detention of immigrant workers that have not committed a crime. As well as NO copycat Arizona Legislation in NJ, an end to 287(g) and a halt to the deployment of "Secure Communities". I would like to thank for the presence of the Honorable Julio Tavarez, Councilman of Paterson; the distinguished Deputy Mayor of Paterson, Maria del Pilar Rivas and the outstanding leader Norberto Curitomai; as well as the support of Jose Luis Garcia of the Jornaleros Unidos of Passaic and Jorge Canarte of the Alianza Ecuatoriana of Passaic. I would also like to mention the excellent work partly realized by Gamaliel Guardia of The Peruvian American Political Action Committee; Henry Sosa of Team Vision; Isabel Agudelo of the Sociedad de Amigos Colombians; Gabriela Perez of the Camara de Comercio de Mexicanos Unidos; and the social activists: Rosalina Santos, Karla Ramos and Fernando Martinez in the organization of this event. Together we have decided to keep developing actions in favor of immigrants through the PASSAIC COUNTY COALITION for IMMIGRANT RIGHTS. All the residents of this county are invited to join us as we continue working and organizing actions in favor of our undocumented immigrants. The next meeting will be Friday, July 16th at 6:00pm in one of the conference rooms of St. Agnes Church of Paterson, 691 Main Ave , Paterson , NJ 07503 next to St. Joseph Hospital. We await you. On Tuesday, July 6th, news started going around that the Department of Justice had started a lawsuit against Arizona in reference to the law SB1070. That same lawsuit has been done by different organizations that support immigrants such as CONLAMIC (National Coalition of Latino Clergy and Christian Leaders). Why the slowness of the government in presenting this lawsuit against a law that was unconstitutional since the beginning. It seems like they made themselves blinded and deaf and after our pressure, they had to act. To me, it sees that it was just a strategy to elevate the popularity of the Democrats and like that they could win the elections in November. Well, they are scared and why not since they have lost 20% of the 67% of the Latino support that they had during the presidential election. They think that Hispanics are stupid and we don't realize that the support is pure words and the only thing that we have received is an increase in deportation and the destruction of families. If the president is so worried about our undocumented brothers and sisters, why doesn't he make an executive law putting a halt to deportations that would demonstrate a serious commitment to an immigration reform. That would be a serious action that would show us that he did not lie to us. I am an American citizen and I am fighting against the immorality of not having a humane law of immigration. I have organized and participated in marches and actions in favor of my family, friends, acquaintances and many of you that need a reform passed now. It is time for you to worry about what is going on with immigration, don't think that a law like SB1070 of Arizona won't pass here in the Garden State . In actuality there are 20 states already discussing laws and resolutions similar to this one. We cannot stay calm in the face of danger, when in reality we have a resolution in the State of New Jersey -sponsored by the republican Chistopher Connors-that mistreats the children of our undocumented brothers and sisters that were born here called the SCR No 77 (SCR77 Memorializes Congress to enact immigration policies that better serve the national interest.) of this I have taken an excerpt: "passing a resolution to amend the Constitution of the United States so that the automatic birthright of citizenship privilege in the United States applies only for children of United States citizens and legal permanent residents". This goes against the 14th Amendment of the Constitution of the United States , which gives automatic citizenship to those born in this country. To finish, I would like to say that this beautiful country has been a victim to the craziness of racists and prejudice people, including in the Supreme Court; with many irrational actions. I would like to share with you that in 1857, the Supreme Court, determined that Dred Scout V. Standford, (He was born in Virginia) was not able to become citizen because: "people of African descent imported into the United States and held as slaves, or their descendants—whether or not they were slaves—were not protected by the Constitution and could never be citizens of the United States" How does this appear similar to the resolution that Connors has presented in New Jersey. Please let us not stay asleep (Like someone said, that President Obama has given us Novocain) with the many false promises. It is enough. Let's keep on fighting. On July 29th the law SB1070 will become effective, has anyone decided: What are we going to do then or what are we going to do now…Sleep?...OK. I humbly thank you for your generosity in reading my emails. DORMIR? ... Yo no… Yo me mantendre despierto.
