OGDEN -- What came in the postal mail surprised federal and state officials who heard about it.
In a 30-page package of information was a detailed list of names with phone numbers, social security numbers, even notes on pregnancies.
The list -- 1,300 names long -- claims to be illegal immigrants living in Utah.
Sent to the Standard Examiner last week, it came from an anonymous sender claiming to represent a group of people concerned about immigration.
"We are tired of seeing our country -- and our state -- continue to allow illegal immigrants to remain here," writes the sender, who notes copies were sent to at least a dozen agencies and media outlets.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials purportedly received a copy in April.
But federal officials said, for both privacy and investigatory reasons, they cannot confirm they have received such a list.
"We have a national tip line. We get a lot of leads on that line," said Lori Haley, ICE spokesperson.
More than 100 people are listed in the mailed packet as living in the Top of Utah, including Ogden.
Weber County Sheriff Brad Slater said on Monday he had just received the packet.
Slater said they normally deal with immigration issues after people have been arrested.
"I will pass it on to ICE," he said.
The Davis County Sheriff department confirmed it had received a copy, as well.
Tony Yapias, a former director for the Office of Hispanic Affairs under former governors Michael Leavitt and Olene Walker, was highly concerned about the scope and depth of the information on the list.
"I think it is kind of scary, to have access to this," said Yapias, currently director of Proyecto Latino de Utah.
Yapias believes someone with access to restricted state or federal records helped compile the packet of information.
He said he will ask Gov. Gary Herbert to investigate the situation.
