[RED DEMOCRATICA] A Democratic Recession, Winning the War on Terror, and More

Dear Reader,

As many of you know, the upcoming Nov/Dec 2010 issue will be my last as Foreign Affairs editor. The theme of the issue is "The World Ahead," and Hillary Clinton, Google CEO Eric Schmidt, and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan are just a few of the policymakers and innovators we've invited to discuss the future of U.S. foreign policy. Subscribe now for only $19.95, and your subscription will start with this special issue.

During my 18 years at Foreign Affairs, we published a great many articles of which I am very proud. I shared some favorites with you in August, and below are a few more. These articles—and 50 years of archives—are available for subscribers at ForeignAffairs.com.

* The Democratic Rollback (Mar/Apr 2008) by Larry Diamond
After decades of historic gains, the world has slipped into a democratic recession. Predatory states are on the rise, threatening both nascent and established democracies throughout the world.

* The New Population Bomb (Jan/Feb 2010) by Jack A. Goldstone
The relative demographic weight of the world's developed countries is dropping as the populations of the poorest, youngest, and most heavily Muslim countries are growing. Policymakers will have to adapt current global institutions to this new reality.

* Can the War on Terror be Won? (Nov/Dec 2007) by Philip H. Gordon
Victory will come only when Washington succeeds in discrediting the terrorists' ideology and undermining their support.

* Putin and the Oligarchs (Nov/Dec 2004) by Marshall I. Goldman
Fault lines in the post-Soviet political economy are emerging. The reforms and privatization of the 1990s were so flawed and unfair as to make them unstable. Vladimir Putin's authoritarian tendencies have proved equally flawed and unfair and perhaps equally unstable.

* The Challenge of Global Health (Jan/Feb 2007) by Laurie Garrett
Unless international efforts start tackling public health in general instead of narrow, disease-specific problems—and unless the brain drain from the developing world can be stopped—poor countries could be pushed further into trouble.

Subscribe today for $19.95 and you'll receive six issues of Foreign Affairs—a savings of 70% off the newsstand price. You'll also receive access to the Web archives and digital reprint of The Clash of Civilizations? The Debate as an added premium. This anthology includes Samuel Huntington's original article and responses that it inspired—and it's free with your subscription.

As for me, some of you have asked what's next. I'll remain active in international policy issues by chairing Human Rights Watch, working with an international consulting firm, and teaching at New York University's Center for Global Affairs.

If you are already a subscriber, we thank you for your continued readership. Please register at www.ForeignAffairs.com/register to take advantage of your full online benefits.

Best,

P.S. If you missed my earlier picks, they were The Clash of Civilizations?, Competitiveness: A Dangerous Obsession, The Tiananmen Papers, The Payoff From Women's Rights, and When the Shiites Rise.
