U.S. eases Somalia aid restrictions, assures aid groups

Aid groups will not be prosecuted in the U.S. if some of the assistance they are delivering to famine-stricken Somalia makes its way into the hands of the Islamist militant group al-Shabab, a U.S. State Department spokesman said. In an interview, the administrator for the U.S. Agency for International Development called the drought affecting 12 million across the Horn of Africa "tragic," adding that "it's worse than I think most people believe." "Where should editors station reporters that would best position them to uncover the next great global health story? Geneva? Seattle? Those places are global health hubs. But the emerging story is further south. In Houston, Texas, to be precise."

  • Council is still divided over Syria crackdown
The second day of closed-door talks at the UN Security Council could not yield consensus among members over the escalating violence in Syria, where the regime of President Bashar al-Assad has laid siege on the city of Hama. The lack of broad support for a resolution condemning the crackdown on mostly peaceful anti-government protests has prompted countries to go it alone. Italy recalled its ambassador to Syria, and the U.S. Senate was considering imposing harsher economic sanctions against the country. "This is the biggest transfer of wealth in terms of intellectual property in history," said a spokesman for the McAfee security company, who added that hackers broke into UN computers in Geneva in 2008, then combed through secret data for nearly two years.
