New donations to aid Global Fund, global health

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has announced that it expects $1.6 billion in new funding through 2014 after reorganizing its operations under General Manager Gabriel Jaramillo. The money will be used to fund new health grants. Reuters (5/9), The Wall Street Journal (5/9) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

"There is little money available for humanitarian response. In all, the international community has kicked in $189 million, which represents about 42% of what the UN says is required to meet the urgent humanitarian needs of Yemeni people. The top funders are Germany (about $30 million) and the USA (about $28 million). But there is still a funding gap of $265 million–and that is why hundreds of thousands of children may starve to death."

  • What to do to ensure babies are born HIV-free
As Mother's Day approaches, Michel Sidibe, head of UNAIDS, is reminding parents of three steps they can take to ensure that their babies are born free of the virus -- unlike the 390,000 children born with HIV each year. He urges people to become knowledgeable about HIV prevention and treatment; share what they learn with others; and support programs helping pregnant women living with HIV. And these are a product of what's been referred to as intergenerational trauma spanning decades, really centuries, since the founding of the country and before," Anaya said. • Higher temperatures are called a near certainty
Neither government nor business is likely to do enough to stem the effects of climate change, leading to rises in average global temperatures of 2 degrees Celsius by 2052, and 2.8 degrees by 2080, according to the Club of Rome. "We are emitting twice as much greenhouse gases every year as are absorbed by the world's forests and oceans. This overshoot will worsen and will peak in 2030," said Jorgen Randers, who wrote the report from the Switzerland-based think tank. AlertNet/Reuters (5/8) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
