WFP cutbacks highlight strain on global food aid programs
The World Food Programme and others are being hampered by dwindling donations and the increased demand for food aid. "The vouchers are exactly what help from the international community should be all about, and the program should promptly get the funds it needs to carry on as the winter months make the plight of the refugees even more miserable," argues The New York Times in an editorial. UN's Zeid: Defenders of women's rights deserve our support
Male and female advocates for women's rights have done much to secure the goals of the United Nations' 1990s conference on women, writes Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, the UN's high commissioner for human rights. "Their work, their activism and their courage deserve our recognition, our support and our respect," he writes. The UN human rights agency is starting a campaign next week to honor these defenders and encourage others "to join the ranks of these strong and inspiring advocates," he adds.
