Dear friends and colleagues,

We are writing to invite you to join us to a five-mile Walk towards Humane Immigration Policy on International Human Rights Day, December 10th 2009. The walk will be from the federal immigration building in Newark to the Elizabeth Detention Center in Elizabeth, New Jersey. The total distance is 5 miles, and walk time is approximately two and half hours.

In the following week or so, American Friends Services Committee will draft a letter  to let our Members of Congress know that we are walking five miles for human rights and for immigrant rights, and we ask for their support for a humane immigration policy, a policy that's long overdue. This letter will be delivered by walk participants including you, to the respective Congressional Representatives prior to the walk. We expect to have community participation from most NJ's congressional districts.

Specifically, we are calling for a humane immigration policy that will:

·         Provide lawful permanent residence for undocumented individuals;

·         Treat immigrant workers fairly and with dignity;

·         Unite families;

·         Respect due process for all; and

·         End the detention and deportation of immigrants.

We will gather in front of the Federal Building in Newark (970 Broad Street) at 12 noon, then walk about two and half hours to Elizabeth Detention Center (625 Evan Street, Elizabeth). We plan to have a rally and/or a short program in front of the detention center around 3pm.

Please RSVP to me by Nov. 30th or as soon as you know.  We encourage you to invite your community members who are impacted by current policy to join us. Thank you for your attention. Enclosed is the invite letter and flyer in Spanish. We will send bilingual materials shortly.
