Toll of Syrian conflict: 8,000 deaths, 230,000 displaced

The ongoing conflict in Syria has claimed the lives of more than 8,000 people, according to UN officials, and forced at least 230,000 Syrians to flee their homes. Kofi Annan, the United Nations-Arab League envoy to the country, said he was expecting a response today from the regime of President Bashar al-Assad that included "concrete proposals" to end the violence. "In light of the recent publicity around Invisible Children's 'Kony 2012' documentary and campaign, and speaking as a survivor, a young man born and raised in the midst of the LRA war, growing up in internally displaced person (IDP) camps and avoiding abductions in many ways, I represent the realities of the LRA war."
