Humildemente,

INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS DAY SPARKS LONG WALK FOR JUSTICE

Dozens March from Newark to Elizabeth , New Jersey for Humane Immigration Policy

[ Newark , NJ December 8, 2009] Over 70 people representing 25 groups from throughout New Jersey will march six and half miles from the Federal Immigration Building in Newark to Elizabeth Detention Center on International Human Rights Day, December 10th 2009. All the groups on the walk are contacting their Members of Congress to inform them about the walk and urge their support for humane immigration policy. Many others plan to call their congressmen making the same demand.

These 25 groups include immigrant workers, detention and immigrant rights advocates, faith-based leaders, service providers, and concerned individuals.   The participants come from all thirteen congressional districts in New Jersey and speak with one unified voice to support humane immigration policy.  That policy would provide lawful permanent residence for undocumented individuals; fair and dignified treatment of immigrant workers; intact families and re-unification of families that have been separated; due process for all; and an end to the detention and deportation of immigrants.  In FY 2008, a total of 378,582 immigrants nationwide were detained by Immigration and Custom Enforcement – tearing thousands of families apart.

Congress is expected to release bi-partisan immigration reform legislation as early as January 2010. The main purpose for the walk is to show how current broken law has hurt human rights of immigrants and some citizens, and demand fair and humane immigration policy.
