Plan would speed drug approvals for neglected diseases

Nearly 90 promising new medicines, vaccines and diagnostic techniques are mired in lengthy clinical trials that could mean it will take years before the drugs reach the estimated 1 billion people suffering from neglected diseases in the developing world. A streamlined regional regulatory process is being proposed by the Center for Global Development to reduce costs and bureaucratic snags. "Good, basic, medical care will save kids' lives. We knew that already, but an exciting new study in The Lancet makes it extremely clear. According to a new study conducted by Save the Children, 'Children treated at home for severe pneumonia by Pakistan's "Lady Health Workers" were more likely to recover than children referred to health facilities.' "

  • Study shows sickle cell role in protection from malaria
Pictures of frozen red blood cells with the sickle cell trait show how the mutation, which can be deadly if passed on to a child by both parents, protects against malaria. The trait, which is common in West Africa, and people of West African descent, ensures that abnormal blood cells are carried to the spleen and destroyed, according to a study by scientists from Germany and Burkina Faso. In the 10 years since the World Trade Organization began, it has done little to follow through on promises to promote the needs of developing countries.
