With long, overly academic-sounding titles, books written by UN officials about life in the field are swiftly relegated to libraries and classrooms. And that's too bad, writes Colum Lynch, because books such as "Afghanistan's Troubled Transition: Politics, Peacekeeping, and the 2004 Presidential Election" -- which explains why Afghanistan has been unable to establish durable local institutions -- are some of the best available. ForeignPolicy.com/Turtle Bay blog (3/6) - UNESCO approves controversial science prize
The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization on Thursday brushed aside the entreaties of Western powers, and even its own lawyers, to approve a scientific award sponsored by Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, the longtime dictator of Equatorial Guinea. The award will not carry Obiang's name, however, but will now be called the UNESCO-Equatorial Guinea International Prize for Research in the Life Sciences. The New York Times (tiered subscription model) (3/8) - Food prices are projected to soar in 2013
Computer modeling that has been accurately predicting food prices shows that investor speculation in commodity futures, combined with the conversion of crops into biofuels, will cause food prices to skyrocket in 2013, leading to widespread hunger, social unrest and death across the developing world. "Once people understand that markets are not always in equilibrium and that buying futures can affect real prices, we hope they will take action," said Yaneer Bar-Yam, president of the New England Complex Systems Institute. The New York Times (tiered subscription model)/Green blog (3/7) - UN biodiversity chief eyes private investment
It would cost some $300 billion a year over the next eight years to preserve the global biodiversity in animal and plant life, said Braulio Ferreira de Souza Dias, the new chief of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity. The figure -- meeting which would require public-private partnerships -- is about 10 times the amount now spent on the sustainable management of agriculture, forests, and fresh water, coastal and marine ecosystems. AlertNet/Reuters (3/7) - Energy group calls for global nuclear safety accord
The World Energy Council is calling upon world governments to urgently draw up and approve an international agreement on the management and safety of nuclear power plants. "The time is right," the council wrote in a report a year after Japan's Fukushima nuclear disaster. "There is critical need to inform the public about issues relating to nuclear generation technologies, safety, costs, benefits and risks." The Guardian (London) (3/9) - Origami sensors could identify malaria, HIV
Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin have created origami-inspired 3D paper sensors, called oPADs, that could be used to detect -- at a cost of less than 10 cents per test -- diseases such as malaria and HIV. CNET (3/8) - Syrian exiles are wary of diplomacy
The leading Syrian opposition alliance has criticized UN-Arab League special envoy Kofi Annan for seeking a political solution to the rampant bloodshed in the country, saying such an effort had no hope of succeeding and would only grant the regime of President Bashar al-Assad more time to further target anti-government protesters. Valerie Amos, the UN humanitarian chief, was visiting Syrian refugee camps in neighboring Turkey.
