U of U SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINES IMMINENT

First-generation, low-income students encouraged to apply

Jan. 26, 2010 — The deadlines for two substantial University of Utah scholarships are fast approaching and students, with the support of parents and educators, are encouraged to apply.  Both scholarships are targeted at first-generation, low-income students and provide significant financial and academic support for qualifying students in this economically challenging time. Each scholarship provides up to $5,000 annually to cover the cost of tuition, fees, and books. In addition, selected students will participate in a faculty mentoring program, as well as academic and social support programs toward their educational success.

The Suder Foundation Scholarship (TSF) will provide 20 scholarships to new University of Utah, first-generation, freshmen from low-income households. Applications for the Suder Foundation Scholarship are due February 1, 2010 for incoming Fall Semester 2010.  TSF Scholarship is made possible by a major grant awarded by The Suder Foundation to the University of Utah.

The Utah Opportunity Scholarship deadline is February 19, 2010 and targets low-income students. It also seeks students from diverse, underrepresented backgrounds.

"The Suder Foundation and Utah Opportunity Scholarships offer excellent opportunities to students who otherwise might not be able to attend college," said Feleti Matagi, director of diversity scholarships and grants for the Office for Equity and Diversity at the University of Utah. "The presence and success of these students on campus benefits them individually, but also enhances the educational experiences and lives of our entire community."

In the past two years the Office for Equity and Diversity, under the direction of Octavio Villalpando, associate vice president, has made a substantial commitment in resources, research and scholarship to provide first-generation, low-income and underrepresented students with pathways to a successful experience in higher education. These two scholarships represent those efforts and are designed to help meet the challenges these students face in the coming years and to help secure our nation's economic future.
