Report: 15 million babies are born premature worldwide every year

About 15 million premature babies are born every year, according to a report from the March of Dimes, World Health Organization and a coalition of international health experts. "Being born too soon is an unrecognized killer," says Dr. Joy Lawn of Save the Children, who co-authored the report. "The Hazara people, who originate from Afghanistan and historically formed an ethnic underclass in that country, have lived peacefully in neighboring Pakistan for centuries. But over the past decade, at least 500 of Hazara civilians have been killed and hundreds more have been injured in targeted ethno-sectarian attacks the city of Quetta. The violence has trapped one of South Asia's most vulnerable populations between the conflict and uncertainty in Afghanistan and the growing anti-Shia movement in Pakistan, a country many Hazaras previously considered a safe haven."

  • Sudan, S. Sudan threatened by UN with sanctions
Sudan and South Sudan were warned Wednesday by the UN Security Council that they could face sanctions if they don't stop by Friday the cross-border attacks that have caused thousands to abandon their villages in the Nuba Mountains and brought the countries to the brink of full-scale war. The Security Council is backing an African Union blueprint for peace. ForeignPolicy.com/Turtle Bay blog (5/2), BBC (5/3) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • GAVI's Berkley resolved to vaccinate all kids against preventable diseases
Seth Berkley recalls the work that preceded his appointment as head of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization, and his goal of vaccinating every child in need against every preventable disease. "It's only a matter of political will, a little bit of money and some systems to do it," says Berkley, who adds that while he is pragmatic, his determination is "almost like a religious belief." Roseline Amondi, a restaurant owner in Nairobi, Kenya, recounts how her new cookstove -- powered by biogas harnessed from the community bathroom -- has reduced costs to one-tenth of previous levels, when she burned wood. A coordinator for the Kenya Cookstove Program of the German aid agency GIZ says a program that has distributed 1.3 million clean cookstoves since 2006 saves about 1.4 million tons of firewood annually, or 78,000 hectares of forest. • Sorghum is gaining adherents in Kenya
Small farmers in Kenya are switching away from climate-vulnerable barley in favor of hardier sorghum, both ingredients in high demand by the country's largest brewers of beer. Erratic weather patterns linked to chronic shortages of rainfall have meant that there is not enough moisture to grow barley. AlertNet (4/29) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
