New Security Council makeup likely to help U.S. diplomacy

Four of the five new non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council -- Australia, Luxembourg, Rwanda and South Korea -- are expected to be more supportive of U.S. efforts during the next two years. In recent years, most non-permanent members were emerging powers seeking to leave their mark. "This is a major plus for American diplomacy. They won't have the headache of having to court big players, like the IBSA [India, Brazil and South Africa] who are not always in your pocket," said Jeffrey Laurenti of the Century Foundation. • Where is the outcry over plight of Afghan women?
Prominent Afghan women are seeking to use the global outcry over the shooting of Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousufzai to draw attention to the situation faced by women and girls in their country. "Every day an Afghan girl is abused, raped, has acid thrown on her face and mutilated. Yet no one remembers or acknowledges these girls," said Elay Ershad, a female member of parliament, adding that Afghan officials are more outraged over the attack on Malala than similar incidents against Afghan girls. • Will Nigeria successfully privatize electricity?
The coming privatization of the power sector in Nigeria ostensibly would increase electricity output, delivering power to millions of poor people who live without it. But observers fear that the less-than-transparent process will look a lot like that in Russia in the early 1990s, when state assets were sold to parties with little or no experience in managing such utilities.
