UN makes plans in event of Syria cease-fire

The United Nations is making plans for a peacekeeping force for Syria should UN-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi be successful in securing a three-day cease-fire next weekend that holds. Herve Ladsous, UN chief of peacekeeping, said he could swiftly muster a 3,000-strong force, but deployment would require approval by the Security Council. Brahimi said he had secured "promises" to halt fighting beginning Friday, but the truce remains uncertain.
