Global access to water rises to 87%, UN study shows

More people have gained access to more sources of water over the past 20 years, but parts of sub-Saharan Africa, Southern Asia, Eastern Asia and South-East Asia continue to lag behind the global trend, according to joint study by UNICEF and the World Health Organization. "The good news is that almost 1.8 billion more people now have access to drinking water compared to the start of the 1990s," said Sanjay Wijesekera, UNICEF's water and sanitation chief. "There's a long tradition of philanthropy in American sports, though it is somewhat rare for players to come together for a far-off and slow burning crisis like the Horn of Africa. Still, some top-notch players are pitching for the USAID-FWD campaign."

  • UN: Aid is needed for Philippines as disease looms
The United Nations today appealed for $28.6 million to provide some half million Filipinos with food, clean water and emergency shelter after flash floods that killed more than 1,000 people. "Many will never be found and we don't know how many are really missing. No one will report them because entire families were swept" out to sea, said Gwendolyn Pang, head of the Philippine Red Cross. • Sun setting on the traditional way of measuring time?
At the meeting next month of the UN's International Telecommunications Union, members could opt to have time measured entirely by the atomic clock, marking the first time that the time is not dependent on the rising and falling of the sun. Some say the measure slated to be voted upon has implications, often expensive, that have yet to be fully considered. Bloomberg (12/21) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Dalit millionaires foster change in India
The success in business of Ashok Khade, one of the 200 million Dalit "untouchables" in India's caste system, can be attributed partly to brains and work ethic, and partly to government affirmative-action programs. The education gap between other castes and Dalits has been halved, and the wage gap has decreased to 21%, down from 36% in 1983 -- less than the gap between white and black male workers in the U.S. The New York Times (tiered subscription model) (12/21) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Uniting mHealth advocates despite different aims
The community of advocates at the mHealth summit this month in Washington, D.C., appeared to be divided between those who want to use mobile technology to improve health care quality and access in order to turn a profit, and those who want to improve the lives of the world's poor, writes Kate Otto, a public health consultant. One thing upon which all should be able to agree, she adds, is the importance of coming up with ways to better understand end-user experience, human behavior, and how people function before technology enters the picture. • The case for commodities regulation
Is it time for global regulators to stop the speculation that fueled much of the volatility that caused some to go hungry, and others to usher in revolution, over the past year? An important first step would be to ensure market transparency by making public the identities of those who hold the biggest stakes -- bankers, hedge funds and sovereign wealth funds -- in global commodities, says Yaneer Bar-Yam, a professor at the New England Complex Systems Institute.
