Global health accomplishments of 2011

Karl Hofmann, head of the global health organization PSI, lists his picks for the 10 top achievements in global health during 2011. Notable among the milestones are the spread of "treatment as prevention" as a means to reduce transmission of the HIV virus, and gains seen from investment in the prevention of pneumonia and malaria. "The human rights community in Afghanistan came under attack last Thursday when President Hamid Karzai refused to renew the contracts of three members of the country's human rights commission -- effectively firing them. One of the three commissioners removed from the panel was Nader Nadery, arguably Afghanistan's most respected and well-known human rights advocate, a tireless and often provocative voice for transitional justice."

  • UN raises alarm over bird flu developments
The World Health Organization is expressing grave concern over the efforts of scientists in the U.S. and The Netherlands to engineer a highly contagious version of H5N1 virus. The bird flu has a current mortality rate of over 50%. Reuters (12/30) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Asia pays a heavy price for natural disasters
Asian countries paid the heaviest economic price for natural disasters in 2011, with 90% of the world's $270 billion in related losses occurring in the region, development experts say. The earthquake and tsunami in Japan and flooding across Southeast Asia contributed heavily to regional losses. IRINNews.org (12/30) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Family sizes changing across Latin America
Fertility rates are dropping across Latin America as modern financial realities, improved health care and mass migrations to urban centers have resulted in women exerting more control over family planning. The average fertility rate across the region has dropped from 6 in 1960 to 2.3 in 2010. The Washington Post (12/29) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Notorious slum emblematic of India's informal economy
In the sprawling Dharavi slum in the Indian city of Mumbai, some 1 million people live in an area barely two-thirds the size of New York's Central Park, a "mini India" where the extremes of human misery are matched only, perhaps, by an annual economic output estimated at $600 million to more than $1 billion. The slum is emblematic of the huge portions of India's economy that operate in the shadows. The New York Times (tiered subscription model) (12/28) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Sex-selective abortions still common in India
A mechanical device that allows authorities to track sonograms and monitor doctors' abortion decisions is drawing fire from Indian activists as failing to be a solution to gender-selective abortions. Research shows that India has lost 12 million females to selective abortions in the last three decades. TrustLaw (12/29) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • 2011 smashes extreme weather, disaster records
The world continued to get hotter, Arctic sea ice measured record lows, and North America experienced a rise in extreme weather patterns, notes John Vidal, environment editor for The Guardian, in a far-reaching wrap-up of global climate news for 2011. The Guardian (London) (12/22) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • U.S. fighting EU leadership on air travel gas emissions
Elizabeth Kolbert, a staff writer at The New Yorker, writes on U.S. efforts to stop the European Union from requiring airlines to live within an emissions allotment, or to purchase credits on Europe's carbon market. Citing the observation by Timothy E. Wirth, President of the United Nations Foundation, that climate leadership doesn't exist in the administration of President Barack Obama, she concludes that the U.S. "is behaving in a manner that seems best described as unforgivable."
