The Cuban Missile Crisis 50 Years Later
What does it mean for handling today's crises?

In October 1962, the United States and the USSR began a 13-day confrontation, the Cuban Missile Crisis, which marked the moment when the Cold War came closest to a nuclear conflict. 50 years later, historians are still uncovering new facts and lessons from all sides of the crisis. To commemorate the anniversary, the Wilson Center released hundreds of newly unclassified and translated documents from around the world, and is hosting a series of events, interviews and publications with the goal of drawing lessons from that crisis that can inform today's policymakers on crisis management and Presidential decision-making.

The Soviet Cuban Missile Crisis: Castro, Mikoyan, Kennedy, Khrushchev, and the Missiles of November
Book Event

Based on secret transcripts of top-level diplomacy undertaken by the number-two Soviet leader, Anastas Mikoyan, The Soviet Cuban Missile Crisis sheds new light on the crisis and Cold War history. The nuclear crisis actually stretched well into November 1962 as the Soviets secretly planned to leave behind in Cuba over 100 tactical nuclear weapons, then reversed themselves because of obstreperous behavior by Fidel Castro. Author Svetlana Savranskaya is joined by Philip Brenner and James Hershberg to discuss the Soviet relationship with revolutionary Cuba.
